Adventures in Press Releases: The Anti-Energy Drink

Posted by Sarah DiGregorio at 10:49 AM, June 4, 2008

Drankcan.jpg
There are plenty of strange products out there, and they all need a publicist. This morning, I got in to the office and was greeted by a message from a sleepy- sounding woman calling about Drank "the anti-energy drink we're calling the extreme relaxation beverage."

Isn't that already covered by a little thing called wine? No? This was too good to pass up, so I gave a call back.

Turns out, this is a carbonated, grape-flavored beverage spiked with melatonin, valerian root and rose hips. Apparently it is "very, very popular in Houston," and it's sold throughout the south in liquor and convenience stores.

So, does it make you sleepy? I asked the publicist. Yes, and she hears it's good with vodka. Oh, something that makes it more likely I'll fall asleep while drinking? Excellent.

What, you might wonder, was the creator thinking? I'm glad you asked. He was thinking of the hip hop community. Direct from the press release:

From design to production, every aspect of this calming drink was inspired by today’s popular hip hop artists who embrace the much sought-after hip hop lifestyle that encourages people to capture a stress-free state of mind.

The drink's tagline is "slow your roll." So if that's something you need to do, keep your eye out. Drank will be hitting stores in New York soon.

Who makes it?

If it's popular in Houston, it's sure to slow your roll....with a screwed-driver...(add vodka)

Posted by: Anonymous at June 4, 2008 5:10 PM

I wonder if they serve it at Chalmun's Cantina in Mos Eisley! LooL361

Posted by: Dr. Han Solo at June 4, 2008 5:29 PM

Interesting. Houston rapper DJ Screw is the first person I remember talking about "drank," a concoction with codeine in it, and a host of others bring it up, too. "Gettin' their lean on," and slowing down.

PURPLE DRANK!

Posted by: werd at June 4, 2008 5:56 PM

TERRIBLE IDEA

you want MORE energy, not less - this drink is counter-productive

Posted by: Anonymous at June 4, 2008 6:06 PM

It's pretty obvious they're patterning this drink after "purple drank," a.k.a. Sprite with prescription cough syrup containing promethazine and codeine. It was popularized by Houston's DJ Screw, who happened to die from OD'ing on the stuff, and is very popular in the hip hop community in the south. There have been many songs about it or that mention in, mostly from Houston or southern rappers, however it is also mentioned on Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin," in which Houston rapper Pimp C mentions it by one of its other names, lean, in his first line (last verse):

"Uh, smokin out, throwin up, keep it lean up in my cup..."

Pimp C died from a combination of his sleep apnea and elevated levels of promethazine and codeine in his system.

I grew up and went to school in the South Park area of Houston, near where DJ Screw started putting out his underground mix tapes, and use of syrup/lean/drank became very popular in the late 90's in that area.

Hah, I am definitely going to get one of these as soon as I can.

Check out other interesting posts including this one on my site Thelinkist.blogspot.com Thanks!!

Posted by: The Linkist at June 4, 2008 7:12 PM

Marketing is the key here, lets think of pill heads popping extacy pills tripping balls, wanting to slow there near dead heart from the 142 bps... I mean hell, it already says "to slow your roll"...

Posted by: Just a side note. at June 4, 2008 7:31 PM

I live in Houston, and the convenience store at the end of the block has this stuff. While I am aware of the links to the hiphop drug culture, my fiancee and I actually find this stuff a fairly decent insomnia cure. I take melatonin most nights anyway, and it's got the same amount of melatonin, PLUS the valerian, etc.

So yeah. Weird stuff, questionable origin, but does have at least one decent use.

Posted by: MEH at June 4, 2008 7:47 PM

I'm from Houston, a city with opera and ballet companies that consistently draw great reviews, and many excellent fine-art galleries.

And all we get is a an article about "Drank". Maybe I can take some of this stuff with me to the opening night of a show...

Posted by: Phillip Abbott at June 4, 2008 10:39 PM

Hey Phillip,

True enough, and in fact you've got an excellent alt weekly there called the Houston Press, which covers all of those topics and more.
Check it out: http://www.houstonpress.com/

Absurd!

So mixing it with alcohol sounds like a swell idea. Drank 'n Vodka: all the stupid, twice the unconsciousness.

Posted by: Mr. Sticky at June 5, 2008 11:12 AM

Purple Drank is slang for cough syrup, promethazine, and codeine. Look up what it behind the silly name, before you give it free advertising, man. Even googling "Drank" without any arguments would have turned up enough to make one suspicious.

Posted by: coyote at June 5, 2008 12:36 PM

Hip Hop and grape drink...stereotypes

Posted by: Jo Momma at June 5, 2008 3:09 PM

just so y'all know, 'rolling' is slang for being high on exstacy, this drink is pretty brazenly being marketed as a come-down, a sort of more user-friendly quaalude. if you're all coked up, or on some kind of speed or hallucinogen, you drink this and it calms you down some. that's the point.

Posted by: ben at June 5, 2008 4:50 PM

Smoke a joint if you need something to relax you.... This is pointless!

Posted by: Stephen at June 5, 2008 5:00 PM

Doesn't anything mix well with Vodka? I could chase vodka with a can of tomatoes and it would mix well. I think they should have added the codiene too, then I would buy Drank.

Posted by: Some drunk at June 5, 2008 5:13 PM

"awwww cool guys we got milk, OJ, sunny d, and OH YEAH SOME MO' FUCKIN' DRANK DAWG!!!!". The commercial might sound something like that, props to Dave Chapplle for the joke template!

Posted by: Aaron at June 5, 2008 6:27 PM

You can order cases from Mooney Distributing in Houston
281-354-7919
They deliver Drank and Redline to the c-stores. I bought a case off the driver
for 30 bucks but they said that is store pricing and you might pay like 40-50 as an individual.\
Look for the Redline van... they got it!

Posted by: Shawn at June 5, 2008 7:48 PM

is there a website for this so i can see where i can get it at

Posted by: evan at June 5, 2008 7:59 PM

I found the distributor for Drank when I was at a convenience store in Houston.
It gets delivered with the Redline drinks.
The van says Mooney Distributing
281-354-7919 and the web site is
redlinedrinks.com
It ain't on their van or site but they got it. I bought a case from the driver for 30 bucks which is store prices for 24 cans. Stores sell it for 2.49 per can so that is cheap. The driver says individuals usually pay 40- 50 per case
but they had too many for that days route so I got lucky. They got cool videos under media on the site.
Mix redline and drank and yo won't need alcohol!

Posted by: Shawn at June 5, 2008 8:12 PM

if you think this is stupid or dumb then it's not for you! urban style has reinvented america hate it or love it. if you don't know what it is educate yourself and if you don't care then back off. houston has a lot including some of the countries best indie rappers. besides, nelly had his pimp juice

The dirty south with all the chopped & screwed is the perfect market fo' this product. Hypnotic + Drank = Lollipop tastes great, ladies love it.

This drank stuff is a hack drink. The real deal relaxation drink that gives you a sense of calm without the crash is "Vacation in a Bottle" or ViB (www.drinkvib.com). It has recently become available in Dallas, TX and it tastes great by itself or mixed.

Shaping Youth just did a post on what's toxic vs. true in the energy drink market, (links at the end) so I added this Drank 'heads up' for kids who will no doubt be impacted on the teen scene...sigh.

Just because something CAN be marketed doesn't mean it should be. Where's the transparency and disclosure on the ethical front, people? Do we need to wait until some middle-schooler barfs their brains out or ODs by 'drinkin too many Dranks?' ugh.

Even in the 'healthy beverages' market we need to know 'what's in this stuff'---here's my post on same:

Posted by: FROMTX at June 27, 2008 4:31 PM

Just tried some Drank. Bought a can from my barber in Ruston, LA. I drank about 75 % the Mrs. drank the rest. If you want a sleep aide, drink it a good hour before bedtime. This is kicking my butt now. Feels like I'm on some stuff from the 70's. I just had to go online to see how its sold and where I can buy it. Life is hell RedBull in the A.M. Drank in the P.M. Holla Back Yall.

Posted by: Nolan at June 29, 2008 12:36 AM

The FDA forced Cocaine energy drink to change its name because they objected to using a street drug as a marketing campaign.

Since the FDA is predominantly old white people, "drank" will go under the radar.

Ahhhhhhhh PURPLE DRANK!

Sounds like something the NYC market might embrace for a minute. Crunk is still surviving in the stores so you never know.

We all should be on the lookout for DRANK at the X-Games sponsoring the next Chad Muska or Ryan Sheckler. This is a direct hit at Red Bull styled companies & their core demographics.

They should pay Brand Nubians for the rights to use "Slow Down" as the promotional track...

Just my thoughts...

All the best,

I love this stuff!! We sell it at work (a Dallas-area tobacco shop) and it does what it says! for those who are saying "more energy is better, not less!" ... Well, i guess you've never had an anxiety or sleeping disorder. This stuff is seriously like a dose of Tylenol pm.

It also mixes very well with grape, vanilla, or plain vodka! If you mix it, you get a serious buzz like youve had twice as much to drink (so drink at home please!) but absolutely no hangover!

Don't be fooled by imitations like Purple Stuff though, they may taste really good but they don't deliver any effect at all like Drank does. That's why it flies off the shelves, even at 5 bucks a can!!

Posted by: kaia kb at September 26, 2008 8:47 PM

People on here are dumb. Its just a drink. People drink coke and coke is way F***ing bad than this stuff. I drink drank and go to the doctor and he says nothing is wrong with me. Its just another drink they put out in the market. People did all the things you haters are doing now, talkin s**t about there produce b/c you didn't think of the idea. Go do some thing productive with yourselves, and just never buy the drank, your opinions mean nothing...there still gonna sell and make more...

Melatonin is a wonderful natural sleep aid (naturally made in your body). It should be taken before bedtime in controlled doses every night. It sometimes takes a week before getting the full effects. It can be bought at most grocery and health food stores.

Valerian root may have some toxicity. Google it for varied answers. Which means drinking it with alcohol is not a smart thing, neither is putting it in a gimmicky energy drink marketed for hip hop culture.

Grape drink with downers yo.

Drank is great cure for people trying to get to sleep without the use of alcohol.

I brought some home for family and friends in NJ and they loved it.

It seriously makes you tired, so don't drink it if you're going out. That is definitely counter productive.

But it tastes great and helps me get to sleep without "knocking you out" like other sleep aids. And the can is big, so if you get up in the middle of the night and you haven't finished your can, take a sip. Boom. Sleeping again.
