Misplaced hate for authority. To bad they didn't expose some politicians for corruption or a racist cop or an abusive caregiver or anything else that would be a proper response to the fact that you hate authority.
So I thought I would list some other ideas that probably seemed good at the time:
Cuddling a lost little baby bear who seems frightened and all alone.
"Daw, what a cute little kitty!"
"Sure! Come on in officer."
"It is abandoned but everything looks sturdy enough."
"We can just carry the fridge down the stairs, we don't need these straps!"
"He won't use that taser on me."
"Oh shut up! All the bouncers here are pussies! Watch this."
"I can make it!"
"I can trust you."
"The principle asked me to tell him when the other children hurt me and not fight them."
... some years later ...
"The principle asked me to tell him when the other children hurt me and not to break every bone I can get my hands on."

Ironically, one of them is a corrections officer (I changed the title to reflect that).

Priceless! The comment from the police about them delightfully running at the sign is wonderfully revealing. It means they sat off to the side and watched the festivities for a while before "arriving on the 'scene'." My guess is that they were there for a while and most likely called everyone they could to show up before they interacted with the group. This would offer an explanation for why they observed them using the operable sign to gauge their stumbling speed however it was beyond repair when rescued from the fire it went into. I would have loved to be there to hear the conversation the officers had while watching all the fun. I can only imagine what the crew was hollering while running at the sign and such. It also begs the question *when* did they discover the new owners of their stolen sign?

The article from the Hartford Courant is just as good. http://www.courant.com/community/news/ec/hc-versign0617.artjun17,0,5797373.story
